The adrenaline in my system had already sent my pulse racing, but I suddenly felt more aware of it than I had just a few minutes ago. I didn’t like the idea that I’d needed a rescue, but damn if Bradyn wasn’t ten times hotter playing the hero. Especially since he hadn’t gone caveman on the guy. If he kept this up, I wouldn’t be able to stop myself from jumping his bones.

“He didn’t hurt you before I got here, did he?” Bradyn’s gaze ran over me from head to foot, but it wasn’t like when that man had done it. Bradyn was making sure I was okay. He was most likely checking me out too, but he was being polite about it.

“No. He was just running his mouth.” I waited to hear if Bradyn would somehow twist this around to make it my fault, either for coming here alone or how I was dressed. There were so many ways this could go wrong.

“He’s a prick,” Bradyn said, his expression hardening for a moment before he gestured to the seat next to me. “May I?”

“Please do.” I liked the fact that he’d asked, but I had a question of my own that needed answering. “Did you follow me here?”

Bradyn gestured for the bartender to bring him the same thing I was drinking, and then he turned toward me, propping his elbow on the bar. “If I say yes, are you gonna kick me the way you planned to kick that asshole who just left?”

“I guess that depends on why you followed me.” I finished my beer in one long, final drink.

He took a long drink of his own beer before answering, but his eyes never left me. “You seem like the sort of woman who prefers blunt honesty over bein’ polite.”

“Good observation,” I said. “I don’t need the truth to be pretty, just true.”

“All right.”

He took another drink, and I wondered if it was to build his courage or to give himself a moment to prepare for whatever he had to say. Either way, I was intrigued.

“After our…encounter earlier today, I needed to blow off a little steam and mucking out the stalls didn’t do anything but give me time to think.” He set his beer on the bar and leaned a little closer. Not like the other man had done, but still close enough for me to be reminded how absolutely amazing he smelled.

“And why’s that?” I asked, half-flirting but also half wanting to know the answer. “Did I interrupt something with Miss Melodee?”

His eyes narrowed, but the corners of his mouth twitched. “The only thing you interrupted with her was me trying to figure out how to politely tell her I’m not like the boys she has wrapped around her little fingers.”

I ran my eyes over him and let him see the appreciation I had for his form. “No, you are most definitely not a boy. You are all man.”

“Now, I have a question for you.”

“You never answered mine,” I pointed out.
